Power cuts hit Centurion CBD 17/05/2006 10:52 - (SA)
Pretoria - Power failures have hit the Centurion central business district, Highway Gateway Park and surrounding areas, starting in the early hours of Wednesday, the Tshwane municipality said.
Repair teams were at the Kentron substation, south of Pretoria, to assess and repair damage, said municipal spokesperson Antoinette Mostert.
"The expected duration of the outage is not known at this stage. An update will be given once available," said Mostert.
The substation was to be switched back on as soon as possible.
Tshwane metro police spokesman Mel Vosloo said he was not aware of any traffic disturbances as a result of the outage in the area.

Cape Town - All South Africans will have to save energy just as people of the Western Cape have had to do now that the national energy regulator of South Africa (Nersa) has asked Eskom to save several megawatts of power annually.
According to an Eskom statement, Nersa has asked it to save 153MW a year. This has come as a result of the country's rapid economic growth in recent years, putting a lot of strain on the energy supply in peak times.
South Africans will have to learn to use power more sparingly with the help of various programmes and projects.
The distribution of energy-saving light bulbs this month - national energy saving month - was one of the projects Eskom had undertaken to make people aware of power-saving.
During its lifetime, an energy-saving light bulb saves up to 140kg of coal, 360 litres of water and R1.50 a month. It was estimated that Eskom's could save R4.5m with its national light-bulb project.
Industrial heat to be harnessed
Other ways in which Eskom plans to save power include paying clients who generate their own power, and the implementation of radio-controlled switches for turning off geysers. Mmabatho, Worcester and Potchefstroom are already using this technique.
Heat produced by industries, and which would have been lost, will used to generate power in future.
Eskom's energy saving plan will focus initially on the Western Cape and several thousand energy-saving light bulbs have been distributed there.
The province must save 400mW a day for the next 90 days to avoid controlled blackouts.
