Eskom bedoel eintlik hy wurg!!!!

Johannesburg - Around 20 patients were evacuated from Zeerust Hospital in Mafikeng, after the hospital was plunged into darkness by an electrical surge, the North West health department said on Thursday.

"An electrical cable at the main (electrical) supply, burst, causing a blackout of the entire hospital," departmental spokesperson Barba Gaoganediwe said.

He said the incident occurred at 21:00 on Wednesday and that no one was injured.

"We have moved a number of patients to nearby Lehuretshe Hospital, where they will continue to receive medical attention."

Structural damage to the hospital was limited to electric cables, Gaoganediwe said.

The estimated cost of repairs to the damaged electrical cables wasn't immediately known, and Gaoganediwe said the hospital would remain in darkness until repairs could begin.

"We are hoping to receive an estimated cost later today (Thursday) but so far we've been told that the repairs will be major."

Gaoganediwe said transport to Lehuretshe Hospital was available to patients with appointments at the affected hospital.

Hospital: Eskom 'not liable'
26/05/2006 13:34 - (SA)

East London - Back-up generators that didn't start during a weekend power failure in an East London hospital ward, leading to the deaths of four infants, were programmed only to kick in when Eskom power ceased.

The Dispatch Online reported on Friday that this was according to an investigation at Cecilia Makiwane Hospital.

Two senior managers reported that it was a local isolated power interruption only experienced at the ward.

They urged further investigation, although an official statement on their findings - from the provincial health department - said: "The department is already considering procurement of an uninterrupted power supply back-up battery at a cost of R230 000 as per MEC Nomsa Jajula's instructions."

DA wants answers

In an answer to a Democratic Alliance parliamentary question in August 2005, it was revealed that clinical equipment worth R18.6m and engineering equipment worth R4.7m at Cecilia Makiwane Hospital was obsolete.

This week, in a letter addressed to the committee's acting chairperson James Ngculu, the DA asked for Health Minister Manto Tshabalala-Msimang to appear before the health portfolio committee "to explain why it is that, despite adequate warning, no action was taken to replace obsolete equipment at Cecilia Makiwane Hospital".

Ngculu confirmed that he had received the DA's questions, but said it was "important at this stage that we don't sensationalise this thing, but rather look for answers to the problem".

He had contacted the provincial health department for answers and was also waiting for a report from the chief executive of the hospital.

Meanwhile, the Pan Africanist Congress of Azania, as well as the DA had called on the bereaved families to take the matter further.

The PAC's Zingisa Mkabile said the health ministry "must apologise to the families and compensate them. If they fail to do that, the families should take both the minister and the MEC to court".
